1b. The Food List
The center part of the FoodFocus main screen lists the foods that you
have chosen. The nutrition analysis summary at the bottom of the main screen
and the detailed analysis results are based on all these foods.
Objectives
After this lesson, you will be able to:
- Understand how the food list displays "How Much" of "Which
Food" for each food you have selected on the centre portion of the
FoodFocus main screen (See b in the figure
at the left.)
Lesson
Don't be offended by how simple this lesson is. Everybody deserves an
easy lesson occasionally.
Remember that a list can represent foods you have eaten, a shopping
list for a family or a recipe. A typical food is listed in the FoodFocus
food list as a "How Much" ( a quantity) followed by a "Which
Food" (the food name). "How Much" is expressed as a number
of units of a certain measure. Some examples are:
- 1 unit of 250 ml of MILK, PARTLY SKIMMED, 2%
- 4 units of 10 strips of POTATOES, FRENCH FRIED COOKED IN DEEP FAT
- How Much?
- Number of Units- The only thing to remember is that FoodFocus
uses a decimal rather than a fraction for part of a measure (ie One half
is shown as 0.5 instead of 1/2).
- Measure- The measures reflect common quantities for each food
(usually provided by Health Canada). These measures are typically metric
and may include some abbreviations. The measures are expanded when you
are selecting food quantities. For example, one cup of milk would be described
one unit of 250 ml on the food list. However, it would be shown as "250
ml (1 cup) (258 grams)" on the window where you enter the quantity
of milk that you want. (See example in lesson 5.)
- Which Food?
- Food Name- The food names match those in Health Canada publications
such as "Nutrient Values of Some Common Foods" so it is easy
to verify data values.
Review Topics
- Does the nutrient analysis summary information at the bottom of the
FoodFocus main screen apply to all foods in the food list or to just one
food?
- Where do the food names come from?
- Would the diameter of a pizza be given in inches or in centimeters?
