Using FoodFocus- A Tutorial- Not Updated for Version 3.4
PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE RECENT WEB PAGES

This tutorial was created to help teachers and students learn how to best utilize the nutrition analysis capabilities of FoodFocus. It uses Internet technology to deliver information where and when we are unable to provide workshops. This tutorial may be used by anyone who wants to learn more about using FoodFocus in nutrition education.

By the time you have reached the end of this tutorial you will be able to analyze the nutrient content of foods, compare those nutrients to Recommended Nutrient Intakes, interpret detailed analysis displays as well as pictographic summary displays. You will also be able to identify those foods that most and least help you meet nutrient objectives so that you can easily change foods or food quantities to meet those objectives.

Curious? Then peek at the types of displays used in FoodFocus (see main screen in lesson 1 , pictographs in lesson 1c or detailed nutrient analysis results in lesson 3). Or take a quick look at some of the problems FoodFocus can help you solve (see the basic quiz or the more advanced quiz).

Objectives

This tutorial deals with using FoodFocus for nutrition education. In these lessons you will:

Getting Ready...

This tutorial assumes you have a basic knowledge of how to use your web browser. For the initial lessons (lessons 1-4) which describe the most common FoodFocus displays you will only need your web browser.

Subsequent lessons deal with how to use FoodFocus. The most effective approach to becoming comfortable with FoodFocus commands described in this tutorial is to have FoodFocus installed on your computer so that you can practise each command as you read about it. (If you only have the DOS version of FoodFocus, this tutorial is still useful as version 2 provides the basic capabilities described although it does not have graphic capabilities.) You should also be familiar with switching between multiple applications as well as using the mouse to size and move windows.

If you have a copy of the tutorial files, you can do the lessons off-line. You may wish to turn off the Show Location and Show Directory Buttons under the Options of your web browser to get as much display space as possible.

How the Tutorial Works

We suggest that you proceed through the lessons in the listed order, but at any time you can return to the index to jump to a different lesson. At times you may want to print a page-- It's easy! Just select Print from the File menu of your web browser.

As a convention, all menu names and items will be shown in bold text.

Before You Start...

  1. Use the Hotlist or Bookmark feature of your web browser to mark the lesson index page so you can easily get to other lessons.
  2. Be sure you have FoodFocus installed on your computer so that you can perform the steps described in lessons 5-14.
  3. Be sure you know how to switch between your web browser and FoodFocus.

During the Tutorial...

If you are having trouble, see if your situation is covered in our Using FoodFocus FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).

When You Are Done...

Time to Get Started!

Now, if you are ready, go to the index of lessons or go straight to the first lesson. Or you may want to return to the FoodFocus Home page which has most of the links to nutrition education material and activities.
