13. People and Recommended Nutrient Intake
In this lesson you will learn how to specify who will be eating the
foods you have selected.
Objectives
After this lesson, you will be able to:
- Specify how many people in various sex and age groups will be eating
the foods you have selected.
- Specify conditions such as pregnancy that have additional nutrient
requirements.
- Understand the source of nutrient guidelines.
- Understand the use of typical nutrient requirements.
Lesson
The % Daily RNI portion of detailed nutrient analysis results described
in lesson 3 use Recommended Nutrient Intake
values. In the absence of other information, requirements for an adult
female are assumed. You can specify how many people in various sex and
age groups (up to 499 people per group) will be eating the foods you have
selected. (In lesson 14, you can specify the duration
over which the foods will be eaten).

Some of the steps in specifying the group of people on which nutrient
recommendations are based:
- Specify Number of People by Age and Sex- The
number of people in different age and sex groups can be specified by putting
that number in the field beside the description. Click on the Save as
Revised Group button to save this information.
- Specify Additional Needs- You can enter
the number of people with additional needs such as pregnancy, lactation
or smoking. Click on the Save as Revised Group button to save this
information.
- See Nutrient Recommendations- Click on
the Show Nutrient Recommendations button to view the total Recommended
Nutrient Intake for the people and additional needs described above.
- Return to Rest of Program- Click on the
Return to Previous Form button to continue with other FoodFocus
functions.
Note that if you do not use the Save as Revised Group button
the number of people you enter will not be saved. Also note that if you
do not use the Return to Previous Form button when you are finished
the pictographs will not update.
Nutrient guidelines used by FoodFocus are based upon:
- Nutrition Recommendations The Report of the Scientific Review Committee
1990 published by the authority of the Minister of National Health and
Welfare. This report contains Canadian Recommended Nutrient Intake data.
- Nutrition Recommendations Update.... Dietary Fat and Children Report
of the Working Group of the Canadian Paediatric Society and Health Canada.
This report reexamined issues related to dietary fat and children and concluded
that children need more flexibility in fat intake to ensure that childrens'
dietary needs are meet.
- American Heart Association Guidelines- In the absence of specific Health
Canada guidelines for sodium and dietary fibre, the American Heart Association
guidelines of up to 3000 milligrams of sodium for an adult and 15 grams
of dietary fibre per 1000 kilocalories of energy were incorporated.
Typical nutrient recommendations are used for educational purposes.
FoodFocus does not require entry of personal details such as height and
weight to avoid the encouraging a preoccupation with personal body size
and weight loss rather than nutrition fundamentals.
